SPRINGFIELD -- Police will be out in full force this Thanksgiving weekend; one of the busiest travel times of the entire year. And not just here in Central Illinois, but statewide too.

300 agencies are joining IDOT's "Drive to Survive" campaign. They'll be looking out for drunk drivers and unbuckled seat belts. Officers say they want everyone to be safe this holiday.

"We have the responsibility to drive these cars safely down the highway, and not only keep ourselves safe, but keep other motorists safe also," said Chief Deputy Jack Campbell with the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office. "So we have double the responsibility, and that's what it is. It's not a right. It's a privilege to be able to drive a car on the roadways in Illinois. So we want everybody to be safe and have a good Thanksgiving."

Eight people died on the roads last Thanksgiving and around 840 were hurt. Police say you should always buckle up, and if you're going to drink, get a sober ride home.
