SPRINGFIELD -- Tuesday, Governor Pat Quinn ended a contract with the state's largest union. The contract with AFSCME Council 31 ended in June, but had been extended several times while the union continued bargaining with the state.

In a statement, the union said terminating the contract would have "little immediate practical effect." The union said the current contract terms would remain under effect under state law. The governor's office says the union has refused to offer meaningful concessions during the past few months of collective bargaining.
