Licenses for illegal immigrants?

SPRINGFIELD -- Some of the state's top politicians are backing an idea to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. They say it would make our roads safer by cutting down on the number of accidents state-wide.

That's because it would require every driver in Illinois, documented or not, to get a license. It means everyone behind the wheel would have driver's ed training and insurance.

Currently, there are about a quarter million illegal immigrants driving in Illinois. They are all unlicensed and have no insurance. They still go out on the roads when they have to, and that's what can lead to crashes.

The licenses would be a little different than we're used to. They'd only be valid in Illinois, and fingerprints must be provided to get one.

In a push to get the idea passed, both sides of the aisle are supporting the plan. Governor Quinn, who's a democrat is for it, as well as former Governor Jim Edgar, who's a republican.

This is really stupid How many ILLEGAL immigrants do you think will stay in IL with a valid drivers license? Most of the illegal immigrants I know in IL are alcoholics, so you're putting them in a 3 ton rocket. Way to go Illinois!!!

I think this is the a dumb idea. they are ILLEGAL so they have no rights here. You find them than deport them back to where they came from is my thought on the idea
