Maryland joins Big Ten conference

Updated: November 19, 2012
The University of Maryland accepted an invitation to join the Big Ten conference Monday morning. The Board of Regents voted to approve the moave, and will take effect July 1, 2014.

Maryland President Wallace D. Loh said Maryland made the move with "due diligence," citing academics and "financial stability."

There are also multiple reports Rutgers will also join the Big Ten on Tuesday. Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney declined comment on further expansion during Maryland's press conference, saying "this is Maryland's day."

If both teams become the 13th and 14th teams to join the Big Ten, that could signal a division change for Illinois. ESPN's Brett McMurphy reports Illinois would move to the Legends division, joining Nebraska, Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern and Iowa.

Illinois coach Tim Beckman said he found out about the move after morning practice on Monday. He said he did not know specifics, but said the conference would get stronger with Maryland and Rutgers joining.
