CHAMPAIGN -- A treat many say is bad for your health could be gone for good.

"My mom use to warm them up in a microwave so the frosting would be almost melted off," says Matthew Washington.

If you can't tell, he's talking about Twinkies. It's one of the many treats made by the Hostess company which is now for sale. Local store managers say they've definitely seen a spike in Twinkie sales, as well as Wonder Bread, Cupcakes, doughnuts and Ding Dongs. They're all products that have been American staple for sweets since the 30's.

However these days many people prefer healthier treats. It's one reason Hostess announced it's going out of business, though the announcement comes on the heels of pay cuts, employee strikes, and mass layoffs. While the company isn't officially out of business, shoppers aren't taking any chances.

"It's definitely going to let down a lot of people because I am sure they have people that come in and buy this stuff on the regular," says Washington.

Hostess product sales have spiked in several cities across the U.S. Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle are big ones. All have store shelves looking pretty empty. A local County Market says it sold out of Twinkies at noon Friday.
