CHAMPAIGN -- Local school cafeterias are performing well on health inspections, but a few schools had rough inspections over the past year. WCIA-3 News Investigates examined health inspection reports for nearly 200 schools in the viewing area from the past year.

In general, the schools scored well. Vermilion County schools averaged 99% on inspections. Macon County schools averaged 97%. Champaign County schools averaged 87% on the mainly bi-annual inspections.

Health inspectors test food temperatures, make sure employees are following health and safety regulations and ensure kitchens are clean and pest-free. Inspectors can issue violations which need to be corrected immediately or cafeterias could face closure.

During the year schools were analyzed by WCIA-3 News Investigates, those in Vermilion County had 5 violations, schools in Macon County had 31 and schools in Champaign County had 71.

Schools say the violations aren't common, but are sparked mostly by aging cafeterias which are hard to fix because of budget problems.
