DeWITT COUNTY -- A group of Clinton residents is fighting back against taxes.

The group is called the DeWitt County Taxpayer Association. They want to take the county to court, and this battle has been going on the past three years.

Taxpayers received a letter in the mail asking if they wanted to join the lawsuit. Organizers say, for the past three years, the county has levied more taxes than it needed. One of those raised money in case the county is involved in some sort of an injury lawsuit.

The group says DeWitt County agreed to collect taxes to keep that fund at about $1 million. Members claim it's currently at about $2.5 million.

Group members say they expect at least 300 people to join the lawsuit. The deadline to sign up is Saturday. The judge still has to review the case. But if he rules in the group's favor, taxpayers who are part of the lawsuit may be able to get some money back.
