International students drawn to U.S. colleges

Updated: November 27, 2012
URBANA -- A new study shows a record number of students overseas are coming to the United States for college. And for many of them, the University of Illinois is a popular choice.

The UI is second when it comes to the most international students enrolled in the country. It's just behind the University of Southern California.

International students make up 19 percent of kids on campus. Right now, nearly 9,000 are enrolled. In 2009, the number was about 6,000.

The Institute of International Education says a great number of universities with higher numbers of international students are Big Ten schools in the Midwest, including places like Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan State and Minnesota. Some people on campus say international students bring a very important aspect, diversity.

The study also says tuition plays a roll. International students are out-of-state. At UI, that's about $14,000 more than an in-state student pays.
