Helping families cope with loss during holidays

CHAMPAIGN -- A family is turning their loss into a chance to help others. Jane Pica's son, Nicolas, died from heart trouble in 2006.

Since then, she's been going to a group called the Bereaved Parents of the USA. It helps parents cope by connecting with others who have suffered a similar loss.

Now she's starting a chapter in Champaign. Pica hopes to offer help to families who are struggling, especially during the holiday season. 

"The more people we can help, the better," said Pica. "It's very difficult to get through the holidays and what have you when you have a loss like this. We wanted to get it in place so we could be some support for these people. 

The group met for the first time Sunday and plans to meet on the second Sunday of each month. The meetings will be at the Champaign Public Library and they are free.
