SPRINGFIELD -- An Illinois soldier is helping in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. He went to New Jersey to clean up the state's National Guard Museum. WCIA-3's Brittany Harris shares a glimpse of the artifacts expert.

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Whitlock was the director of the Illinois State Military Museum for 16 years. It's just inside Camp Lincoln.

Whitlock was called in personally by the National Guard Museum's curator. They wanted someone with experience, and he has lots of it. He went to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He helped clean up damage at the military museum there.

At one point, the museum in New Jersey was flooded with five feet of water. Whitlock is expected to be there about a week. He's joined by a team of experts which hope they'll be able to salvage many of the artifacts.
