CHAMPAIGN -- The Congressman who's retiring to make way for the new 13th District agrees with John Hartman. Tim Johnson says negative campaign ads and big money are a turn-off and hopes candidates can return to civility for the good of the district.

"I think it affected the outcome in that the independent got between 8 - 10 % of the vote. That's an unusually high percentage and I think a lot of people are people who are turned off by the negative campaigning of both candidates and turned to an alternative," says Johnson.

Johnson decided not to run for re-election after the Republican primary. He's been in office since 2001 and retires in January.
