MATTOON -- College students are pitching in to make sure soldiers have a Merry Christmas. Groups at Lake Land have been collecting money, food and personal items to send to troops in Afghanistan as part of their Veterans Week activities.

They put together 100 boxes. One organizer says the project hits close to home for him because he served in Iraq a few years ago. He says, even though we may take everyday items for granted, they mean a lot to soldiers. In all, supplies worth $3,000 were donated.
