Dems land super-majority at Capitol

SPRINGFIELD -- Democrats will have more power at the Capitol this January. They snagged the super-majority in both the House and Senate. That means they can override Governor Quinn's vetoes and will have enough votes to pass a bill without republican support.

UIS Political Science Professor Kent Redfield says they really need to use this power wisely, especially with big issues like pension reform and fixing the budget. He says it will also be harder for republicans to pass any bills without compromising.

The democrats were able to get the super-majority because several GOP incumbents lost their seats. The party also had an advantage because they redrew districts last year.
