Officials not surprised by high turnout

CHAMPAIGN -- Election officials say they're not surprised to see a high turnout since this is a Presidential election. Aside from some typical issues, things have been running fairly smoothly.

The Champaign County Clerk says he expected to see between 70-80% of voters at the polls. He says, even though many polling places have been busy, they haven't been too crowded.

He says the extra early voting locations encouraged people to vote before Tuesday. About 20,000 people voted early this year in Champaign County. Because of that, the clerk says he plans to open the same early voting locations for county-wide races down the road.

As people have voted, election judges have been counting ballots. They've got quite a bit of work to do before the night is over.

Voter turnout across Central Illinois counties shows similar numbers. Macon, Vermilion and Sangamon County clerks say they also expect between 70-80%. They say voters have stayed pretty steady throughout the day. Some polling places needed to request extra ballots because of how many voters turned out.
