URBANA -- City council members voted for fewer pay raises. They say they can't afford them since the recession.

Now instead of annual 3% raises for elected officials, like it was previously set, there won't be any next year. The raises will start for elected officials in 2014 with a 1% bump.

Meanwhile, council members also discussed the Landmark Hotel project downtown. Last week Les Stratton claimed the owner wouldn't live up to his contract and that the project would cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A city council report states that isn't true. The owner is following his contract and the city is standing behind it. A third of the rooms will open by the end of the year.
