CHAMPAIGN -- The UI is working to go green. People at the university want to build a solar farm to create renewable energy for campus.

If approved, it would be built in a field at the corner of Windsor and First. Right now, it looks like a normal field, but soon, it could be filled with 20-acres of solar panels, all to collect energy for UI.

Here's how it would work. Energy from the sun will be converted to electricity and directed to our power grid on campus. Using this will provide renewable energy for 5% of campus.

This project has been in the works for nearly a year. It would cost $15.5 million to create.

It hasn't been approved yet. The Board of Trustees is expected to discuss all of this next week. If everything goes as planned, this field will be filled with solar panels by next fall.
