CHAMPAIGN -- District 4 schools want to be on point when it comes to education. So, leaders are reaching out to those who know their students best, their parents.

It's the first time they've tried this. They say who knows what students need better than their own moms and dads? Thursday was a chance for families to share ideas with school officials.

Dozens of parents, teachers and community leaders met at Hawthorne Suites. First, they listened to a presentation which discussed some of the background problems the district is seeing.

This is a chance for school leaders to share their vision, but it's also a chance for them to hear what parents have to say. Some of the issues parents are worried about include truancy, graduation rates and job or college prospects for older students.

Individual and group feedback was given to school officials. That was the main goal, to have an open conversation about where the schools are and where they should go.
