CHAMPAIGN -- Teaching kids safety tips and keeping their attention can be tough. That's why the City of Champaign held an event, "Passport to Safety."

It taught kids how to be prepared in emergencies with hands-on games and prizes. Kids say they learned some great tips.

"Don't panic," said Justin Somers.

"You would go to the phone and dial 9-1-1," said Lainey Somers.

"I think adults take it for granted sometimes, and think, 'of course the kids are gonna know to get out of the house in case of emergency.' It's so important to come to events," parent Mike Somers said.

Tango the Safety Dog was the biggest hit, teaching kids to crawl to safety in case of a fire.
