Is voter ID law needed in Illinois?

SPRINGFIELD -- Some state lawmakers want voters to show ID's at the poll, but a new report found that might not be needed. News 21, a national investigative reporting project, says there were 23 voter fraud cases in Illinois in the last 12 years, and none involved someone impersonating someone else.

UIS Political Science Professor Michael Miller studies the topic and isn't surprised by the findings.

"If you want to pass a law that requires people to show ID's at the polls, show us what the problem is. There is according to this report no problem here. This is a solution in search of a problem," he said.

Miller says requiring ID's at the polls would unfairly target minorities and the poor. Opponents argue that wouldn't happen, and say it would help make voting more secure.
