LINCOLN -- A boy scout troop is using its annual fundraiser to help one of its won. The cub scout is battling cancer, so his troop is pitching in to pay some of the costs. WCIA-3's Ashley Michels has the story.

They stood outside in the cold all day selling popcorn. They were so excited to help their friend. They're hoping to put a little money in his pocket and a smile on his face.

It's not uncommon to see scouts selling treats outside the grocery store, but this year the troop isn't raising money for new uniforms or a camping trip. Everything they make is going to Ethan.

"Ethan is a 9-year old cub scout and he's fighting abdominal cancer."

It's hit the family's wallet hard.

"He hasn't been able to get all the support he needs with all the medical bills and all that."

Forcing Ethan to sometimes have to sleep in a car on doctor's visits in St. Louis. So, his fellow scouts decided to step up.

"Scouting is all about community and when we see a need, we do our best to meet that need and that was the case here."

The money helps, but this troop's efforts don't stop there.

"You don't have any hair. Why not?"

"Because I shaved it for my friend Ethan."

And so did the rest of the boys.

"I know, for this troop, it was unanimous. Every single scout said that's what they wanted to do."

"A bunch of scouts made fun of Ethan for being bald, so I shaved my head."

"How cold is it?"

"On a scale of 1 - 10, it would be a 10."

Most had to cover up their new do's on such a chilly day, but it's the thought that counts. All to show a fellow scout he's not alone.

"When I saw him that first night when I showed him my head was shaved, it looked like he was, I mean, happy."

As of Saturday morning, the scouts had already made more than $700 for Ethan. One person even donated hotel points so Ethan won't have to sleep in the car at his next appointment.
