URBANA -- Kids with special needs got to spend time with new friends Saturday. It was the 8th Annual Buddy Walk.

The National Down Syndrome Society started the event. Family, friends and volunteers became buddies for the day for those with special needs.

Before walking a mile around the Champaign County Fairgrounds, families set up tents to show their spirit. They also played games and listened to music. People said they were excited to see so many others from the community showing support.

"Watching everyone participate. We get together and it's very rare that I can get the whole family together to take a walk," said Bill Heck.

WCIA-3's Jennifer Roscoe helped judge the spirit contest. People also got a close-up view of a helicopter which landed on the fairgrounds. Organizers planned about 250 buddy walks for this year around the world.
