URBANA -- Firefighters weren't just putting out smoke and flames Saturday, they're working hard to prevent them.

Several teams stopped by area neighborhoods to inspect smoke detectors. The groups visited more than 100 houses to replace batteries and broken alarms. They also help families create escape plans in the case of a fire.

Firefighter Jacob Hutchcraft says, "Education for small children, what a smoke detector is, what they should do, they need to find their meeting place across the street, wherever their family sets that up. We've replaced a lot of detectors today."

Fire officials say you should change the batteries in your smoke detector every six months. Alarms should be replaced at least every five years. These efforts tie in with Fire Prevention Week which runs October 7 - 13.
