Cool School gets state recognition

MAROA -- A Central Illinois school started a new program and the state is taking notice. It's called PBIS. It stands for Positive Behaviors Intervention and Support.

750 schools in the state started the program, but Maroa-Forsyth is standing out above the rest. The middle school is one of only five schools being recognized for how well students are behaving.

PBIS is like an incentive program. If a student stays out of trouble and does something great in or out of class, they can look forward to some "star bucks," and we're not talking Mocha-Latte. They're like reward dollars which allow them to buy stuff like candy, or dance tickets.

Students say they've seen big changes in their classmates. PBIS also works as a tier system. If a student gets in trouble, they get a verbal warning, written warning, then a referral.

The proof is in the pudding. School leaders set a goal of no more than 45-referrals for the first quarter. As it approaches the end of that quarter, the students don't even have ten.
