SPRINGFIELD -- More than 40% of voters now support gay marriage. That's according to a poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.

The poll found 44% of Illinois voters believe gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to legally marry. That's a 10% increase from 2010 when only 34% backed gay marriage.

The poll also found 32% of voters prefer civil unions which were legalized in Illinois last year. 20% believe there should be no legal recognition. That's down from 27% in 2010.

The poll of registered voters was conducted September 4 - 10 by telephone. Both land lines and cell phones were sampled. There's a margin of error of +/- 3%.
