SPRINGFIELD -- Some lawmakers want stiffer penalties for people who try to impersonate them or any other elected official. They want to make it a felony to try to pass yourself off as a sheriff, mayor or anyone else voted into office. It's currently a misdemeanor.

The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office says, even thought Springfield is a hub for elected officials, it doesn't happen very often. Authorities say most cases they see are online.
