SPRINGFIELD -- Thousands of military members will get to talk to their families thanks to a statewide fundraiser. Eastern Star members have been collecting used cell phones all year.

The grand total is more than a thousand. The phones get recycled and in exchange, soldiers get calling cards. That way, they can keep in touch with their families while they are deployed.

One phone equals about 45 minutes of talk time. The group says it plans to keep collecting phones throughout the next year.
