The summer of 2012 will be remembered as being one of the worst droughts in memory. Very little rain fell in May through July and August actually was a bit below normal too. This summary includes all the information for "meteorological summer" which is June, July and August. The Summer Solstice actually occurred on June 20th and the Fall Equinox ended Summer on on September 22nd.

Statewide Numbers
Statewide temperatures for the Summer of 2012 averaged 76.1 degrees, which is 2.6 degrees above normal. This was the eighth warmest summer on record in Illinois. The warmest was at 78.6 in 1936.
Rainfall wasn't easy to find in the Summer of 2012 with just and average of 6.64 degrees being noted statewide. This was the sixth driest summer on record in Illinois. The driest was 1988 with 6.17".
National Numbers
The summer of 2012 was the third hottest summer on record for the United States. This was helped in a major way by July being the warmest month ever in U.S. history. Just 0.2 degrees separated this summer from topping the hottest ever summer, which was in 1936. Second place is actually held by the summer of 2011, just 0.1 degrees warmer than 2012.
