It's the night chief Illiniwek supporters hoped they would never see.. the symbol's last dance. Although many believed this dance would be no different, it was marked with emotion. Chanting and cheering were the name of the game as the chief took the floor. Then the end of the nearly 80-year tradition brought tears to hundreds of fans' eyes, including current chief Dan Maloney himself. Fans say they'll never forget the significance of this symbol, even if the dance ends. "His spirit is still here," says Illini fan Karen Glick. "He's never gonna die." And afterward, as promised, "students for Chief Illiniwek" took off their orange shirts and put on black on as a sign of mourning. But it wasn't just students hundreds of alumni also came dressed in black. Many say it's the final way to make their voices heard. One final surprise as the three-minute dance came to an end. Chief Dan Maloney gave an unexpected final farewell to fans as he came back onto the court after his dance. He raised his arms and faced all sides of the crowd for a final goodbye.
