New Rules for Unofficial St. Patrick's Day

Updated: February 23, 2007
The campus community is speaking out about new rules for unofficial Saint Patrick's Day. The Champaign City Council gave the mayor authority to try to crack down on binge and underage drinking. Some of the changes this year include only one keg per household party and banning pitchers or straight shots at area bars. Mayor Schweighart says they want to send a message and violators will be arrested. Students say the changes will likely have little effect. The unofficial holiday has caused numerous problems in the past, including one death.
