From Blizzard to Flood Water

Updated: February 19, 2007

The City of Champaign is moving from blizzard clean up to flood prevention.  As temperatures continue to rise, the snow piles will melt away, meaning lots of backed up water.  That's why road crews were out on the streets today.  They were trying to clear snow away from the grates.   They say there are thousands of the inlets across the city, and most of them are covered with snow.  Today they were able to clear several hundred, but  it's been a hard task.  Paul Roberts, with the City of Champaign, says, "it's like finding a needle in a haystack with all this snow we dont know really where they're at...So in between blocks we really have no clue where they're at but we know about every corner there's an inlet."  The city says it's trying to be proactive to prevent flooding tomorrow.  But workers still have a feeling, they'll be back out tomorrow dealing with flooded roads.
