MAHOMET -- It was once a popular resting point for settlers called Middletown. Today, we know the spot just west of Champaign as Our Town Mahomet. It was established in 1832.

Travelers enjoyed the stop because it was between Danville and Bloomington. Known as Middletown, the village was vital for travel because it gave settlers a safe place to cross the river.

Middletown was changed to Mahomet in 1871 because there was already a Middletown in Logan County.
