CHARLESTON -- If you're looking for history in Coles County, you won't have to look far. It's literally painted on buildings in Our Town Charleston.

The city has seven murals painted by five different local artists, depicting the city's past. They were painted between 1999 - 2004.

The project was developed by the Tourism Advisory Board. The murals were meant to beautify and help promote the city.

They also give visitors a look at the city's beginnings. While Lincoln never lived in Charleston, his parents lived south of town. He was a frequent visitor to Charleston and often shopped at local stores.
