Chief Suit

Updated: February 15, 2007
Two U of I students who portray Chief Illiniwek on the football field and basketball court filed suit against the NCAA alleging violations of state law, and their constitutional rights for freedom of speech and expression. The suit was filed in Champaign County Circuit Court this morning, and seeks an injunction keeping the NCAA from imposing sanctions on the university. The plantiffs, Dan Maloney and Logan Ponce, aren't seeking monetary damages, but hope the suit keeps the university from retiring the chief due to pressure from the NCAA.
