DECATUR -- Volunteering might not be Number 1 on everyone's to-do list, but you're about to meet a couple who makes it a daily priority. WCIA-3's Megan Brilley takes us to Our Town to meet the pair who goes above and beyond.

Every once in awhile, I interview people who really make me want to do better. Dick and Betty Lacy are two great examples of inspiration. It started off as a love story.

"I was 18, she was 19. People said, 'You're crazy, you know!'"

Dick and Betty Lacy were high school sweethearts. They've been married for 67-years.

"I"m doing all the talking."

"That's okay."

The two work as a team.

"I think we've just been very fortunate to be able to respond when there was a need."

Whether it's making food for a sick friend, or a neighbor who just lost a loved one.

"You see a need, you help. We just grew up knowing that was a way of life."

For the Lacy's, it's second nature when someone's in need.

"They know, they say, 'Oh, the Lacy's,' before long."

They were recently named "Decatur's Volunteers of the Year."

"They called our names, and we about fell off our chairs."

The dynamic duo has volunteered hundreds of times. Betty recently helped a local youth group build a garden.

"The leader said, 'We're going to have a garden,' two of the little boys said, 'What's a garden?'"

But, for them, it's the small things they do, like holding the door open, or smiling at a stranger, something they don't see much of anymore.

"There was always somebody it seemed, if my lawn mower wasn't working, they'd come over and help. Those kind of neighborly things people don't seem to do anymore."

Award, or not, these two say giving will always be the most used word in their vocabulary.

"We'll never be able to repay some of the kindness that people have shown us over the years, in times of trouble."

The Lacy's were the first to be given the "Volunteers of the Year" award. It's on permanent display at the Hickory Point Golf Course Clubhouse.
