Updated: July 27, 2012
SPRINGFIELD -- The city's park district is conserving water during the recent heat wave and drought. Leaders implemented strategies to reduce water consumption while minimizing the impact on the park's system.

Measures include:
* No longer watering turf areas in the Botanical Garden
* Decreasing water use at Lincoln, Iles, Eons & Washington Park blvds
* Hand watering plants to eliminate runoff & performing early morning watering to reduce evaporation
* Forestry division focusing on watering trees under 2-years old
* Lincoln Park Lagoon waterfall closed
* Carillon fountain turned off until leaks repaired
* Switch to high pressure air for cleaning
* Using rainwater whenever possible
* Golf courses no longer watering non-playing, rough areas; reduced fairway watering to every other day; increasing mulch on new plants
