URBANA -- You know if there's a good lunch spot to be found, Robert Reese is the guy to find it. This week, he takes us to the Black Rock Pizza Company in Our Town Urbana.

The building where it makes its home has quite a history here.

"It's a good location. This place was great for years when it was the Embassy, now as Black Rock Pizza, we're doing good here."

Steve and his partners did not open a pizza restaurant on a whim.

"I brought Black Rock to Urbana because this space was available with some friends of mine, and they wanted to know what I thought would work best here. I looked around Urbana, and realized with the loss of Jolly Roger, Urbana needed a pizza place."

And while the name specifically mentions pizza, the menu is a little more varied.

"If not the pizza, have one of our sandwiches, have one of our salads."

But, let's be honest, we are here for the pizza. But not the typical mass-marketed kind. While you can order them, your choice of toppings goes way beyond sausage, pepperoni and mushroom.

"My absolute favorite is the barbecue chicken pizza. I absolutely love that. It's got a little bit of sweet and spice to it at the same time. It's got a barbecue sauce, jalapenos and red onions, so it's really good."

"My personal favorite pizza? Probably the pesto. On the pesto, you have sausage, artichoke hearts, roasted garlic and onion with a pesto sauce, of course, as the sauce for the pizza."

I am not very adventurous when it comes to my pizza, but I had to try the pesto pizza. And, since I might not like it, I think I'll try the buffalo chicken pizza, too. Oh, in case I don't like that, better check out a salad.

It turned out the pesto pizza was really good, so I really didn't need the buffalo chicken. Since it was right there, I tried it too. Also good, just a tiny, little kick. I found another first-timer and decided to share. Mom would be so proud. Mmmm.

"This looks good. Ooh. That IS really good. Mmmm. Pesto."

OK. Sharing time is over. Remember, you can get routine toppings if you want, but I would recommend eating "outside the box" when you come to Black Rock Pizza Company. It has live entertainment on weekends.

Comments

I always enjoy the eateries that Robert shares. However, seeing the conveyor on that oven being covered from food that has landed on the conveyor and got burned on it, is gross. I work for a place that makes pizzas and ours' would never look like that. I would advise the owner to get a grill brush and clean that conveyor, especially if it's going to be seen on tv.
