Good Samaritans thanked for helping drivers

Witnesses say some parts were more than a foot high. Because of that, Bill McCann of Gilman and Kent Knapp of Thawville, pulled over to make sure drivers slowed down.
Without any cones or reflective jackets, they stood on the side of the road, flagging people down for more than an hour. They say it was at least 100 degrees out at the time, but there was no way they were going to leave. They stopped when police and IDOT crews arrived.
"I've lived around here for most of my life," said Knapp, "I know a lot of people commute down this road. I didn't want to see anybody killed or hurt. It's just something you got to do."
McCann said, "Had to do what we had to do. If you drive away and something happened and you heard about it, you couldn't live with that. We couldn't drive away. There's no way."
The men say they've seen the road buckle before, but never how it did Friday. With their help, IDOT said no accidents were reported.
