Urbana School Board President Speaks Out About Teacher's Arrest

Updated: February 7, 2007
Jon WhiteThe Urbana School Board president wants someone outside the district to look into how it handled a sex crime investigation involving a second grade teacher. Jon White, a teacher at Thomas Paine Elementary, was charged last week with forcing his students to give him oral sex.  The school board spoke out about his arrest for the first time Wednesday night. Board President Joyce Hudson says she wants everything looked into starting with the district's hiring practices. Hudson says she is looking outside for five people to look into the district's hiring practices. She says something should've turned up before White was hired.  Hudson says, "We have to re-look at it to find out what we did wrong because i don't want this happen again." Other school board members agreed. Board member John Dimit says, "It appears we have a problem with one person... we need to get to the bottom of it."  The district is also doing its own internal investigation to see where mistakes were made. The school board is talking about an independent investigation.  Back in November, administrators did an investigation into White but say nothing turned up. Board members say they will look into how that investigation was handled, and if mistakes are discovered, those people could be fired.
