Central Illinois businesses are partnering together to save money on their power bills.  It's all part of the Chamber of Commerce's Energy Co-op in Decatur, Champaign and Peoria.
In Champaign County, it has passed the expectations of the organizers. So much, the consulting firm hired more workers to deal with the extra load. The Chamber of Commerce says it's surprised with the number of sign-ups, but add, it shows it's a good initiative.
About 150 businesses with Champaign County have signed up. Those include McDonald's, the Village of Savoy, and the cities of Urbana and Champaign. Decatur has just as many on-board with the program. All in all, it's more than 1,000 businesses across Central Illinois.
From here, the consultants will work to find the cheapest electricity rate and bidder. That is expected to come at the end of February or early March. Once a contract is proposed, businesses have 24 hours to agree or opt out of the co-op. The length of the contract and price is set for the entire group, and cannot be changed for each.
