Switching out the Lights

Updated: February 1, 2007
Power GenericThe Danville School Board is considering a new proposal to save the district energy amidst higher power prices. District workers want to make some lighting changes in all the schools to help cut down on how much power they're using. But, the switch will cost a half-million dollars, so they need a grant to afford it. District workers say the clock's ticking, because its the last year to apply. "If you don't do it and the grant goes away then we have no access to it. Now's the time to capture the dollars," says district director of building and grounds George Schildt. Tonight Schildt proposed the idea to the board. He told members the switch won't necessarily save the schools money up-front because power prices are already higher. Plus, the district will have some out of pocket costs. But Schildt says it will save money in the long-run. The school board still has to agree before the district will apply for the grant.
