For most of central Illinois, the school year is ending in the next few weeks.  That means that kids, and parents, are going to be spending a LOT more time outside in the sun.  In the next week or so, we will begin including a daily UV Index forecast in our weather segments.  During the summer months, the sun is highest in the sky, meaning the UV rays have a shorter path to the surface, and they are not filtered as much by the atmosphere.  These rays are most intense between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm.

When the UV index is high (10 or higher), it is possible to burn unprotected skin in less than 10 minutes!  For people with sensitive skin, burn times are even lower. These products are designed to minimize your exposure to harmful rays, NOT to increase the amount of time you stay out in the sun.

While most of us enjoy being out in the sun, and making the most of the summer weather, it is important to do it as safely as possible and minimize the chances of long-term skin damage.  For more information on UV exposure, protection, and the UV index, click here.
