January 2-8 has been designated Self-Help Support Group Week. Support groups are available to help members cope with a variety of concerns and challenges, including the difficult task of parenting.

Q: Why have parenting support groups become so popular?
A: Being a good parent is a very hard job, even under the best circumstances. The challenges can be even greater when the family has special circumstances, such as a single parent or a child with special needs. Many families today do not have the support of living near their extended family, and therefore need to look to their broader community for support with parenting issues. Support groups can help address that need.
