1890 - Many buildings were damaged as strong to violent tornadoes tore through southern Illinois. Near Rockwood, 18 inch thick trees were thrown across the Mississippi River into Illinois. Another tornado crossed the river further downstream and destroyed 27 homes in Grand Tower, some of which were completely swept away. A family of tornadoes affected areas along the Ohio River and destroyed 32 buildings in Olney.1961 - Winds up to 80 mph howled across Illinois due to an intense area of low pressure. A gust of 100 mph was recorded at the Joliet airport just before the wind gage was blown away. Springfield had a wind gust of 74 mph at the Capital Airport, which caused damage to a hangar. One person was killed in Dwight due to a car crash when a dust storm reduced visibility to near zero.
1991 - Severe weather pushed across northern Illinois while high winds howled across parts of central and eastern Illinois. Springfield had a 71 mph wind gust at the Capital Airport, which Peoria's airport had a wind gust of 68 mph. Further northeast, severe thunderstorms produced a wind gust of 84 mph at O'Hare Airport and a strong tornado caused $8 million in damge in the far southern Chicago suburbs.
