As you prepare your holiday shopping list, are you struggling to find the right gift for a senior friend or family member? Instead of getting them another robe or sweater, get creative and give them a gift they will truly appreciate.
Q: Are there certain types of gifts we should consider for seniors?
A: Many seniors have more than enough of some of the standard gift items such as clothes, perfume or aftershave. What we should think about instead are gifts of services or items that will make their life a little easier and gifts of our time and company.
Q: What are some examples of these gifts seniors may enjoy?
A:
1.Adaptive or safety devices: If the senior has limitations in his or her vision, strength, balance or mobility, consider gifts such as: non-slip mats or grab bars for the shower or bathtub; a clock or a phone with extra-large numbers; nightlights; and large-handled utensils or other adapted kitchen equipment.
2.Gift certificates for services and daily necessities: Consider gift certificates or gift cards for groceries, prescriptions, power, telephone, a car wash, or home cleaning and maintenance services.
3.Entertainment: Many seniors would enjoy a magazine subscription, tickets to a movie or concert, payment for their cable TV, or a restaurant gift certificate.
4.Your time: A gift that may be treasured above all others by the senior is the gift of your time. Give them a "gift certificate" for a monthly visit that includes the activity of their choice, whether it is helping them to run errands, going out to lunch, or you bringing in dinner and a video. Just be sure not to disappoint- offer only what you can consistently do.
