Weather Vault: February 2012
Updated: February 15, 2013
The month of February 2012 started off the way most of January had been, warmer than normal. In fact, the beginning few days had record breaking temperatures in a few cities, with all of central Illinois hanging out about 15 to 20 degrees above normal and within a few degrees of the records. The nice weather was only damped by the fact that fog was a nightly occurrence and typically became very dense by morning.
While the first work-week of February 2012 was nice, the first weekend started off rough. Cloudy, rainy, and breezy conditions made Saturday, the 4th a nasty, dreary day. Sunday, the 5th, was a sunny and warmer day.
The second work week of February didn't start off as nice as dense fog affected most of central Illinois. The fog never really lifted on Monday, the 6th, and became dense again Monday night and Tuesday morning. Tuesday also had some light fog, but the story was that evening when light snow began to fell and by Wednesday morning, there was a dusting on the ground.
After a quiet, but colder weekend, the work-week began with a snowfall in central Illinois. Snow started in the afternoon of the 13th and lingered into the early morning. Most places saw around and inch or two, but a few places got up to 3".
Most of the rest of the month was warmer than normal and active with off and and rainfall. With the warmer than normal start to the month, the state wide average for February was 35.1 degrees. that's 4.6 degrees above average, the fifteenth warmest on record. Rainfall only totaled 1.55 inches, 0.4 inches below normal.
