Avoiding Charity Scams

Updated: January 7, 2009
‘Tis the season of gift giving and good cheer, but you may need to protect yourself from the Grinches of the world. You want to help people in need, but you also want to be sure that your charitable donation isnt simply going into a crooks pocket. Busey Banks Susan Abbott has advice to tell us how to protect ourselves, and to give a gift that will really help: For the holiday season and for tax reasons, we may be opening up our wallets and checkbooks over the next few weeks. What steps should we take to be sure were giving to those truly in need? -If youre approached by an unfamiliar charity, check it out. -Be cautious about emails seeking charitable contributions. -Be aware of sound-alikes. -Ask how donations are used. -Be wary of requests to support police or firefighters. -Be cautious of causes that claim to be disaster-related. What if we decide we do want to make a contribution? -Investigate! -Dont be rushed, and be careful with personal information. -Dont give cash. -Contact local police and fire departments, schools, senior centers and other programs in the area directly.
