This Day In Weather History

1959 - The northern third of Illinois saw 8 to 12 inches of snow while further south a 70 mile area from Jerseyville to Danville, received 1/2 to 1 inch of ice accumulation.  Thousands of homes were without power for several days.  This was described as the worst ice storm in Springfield since 1942 and the worst in Champaign in at least 50 years.

1999 - Hail up to the size of golfballs fell in a small area along Interstate 57, south of Mattoon.  The hail covered the road, causing several vehicles to skid off the highway.  No injuries were reported.
