This Day In Weather History
1979 - A winter storm dropped snow across the southern half of the state. There were reports of snow as heavy as 8 inches near Carbondale. Further north, up to 5 inches were reported near Vandalia.1989 - Southern Illinois had several tornadoes. The strongest tornado was a 4 on a scale of 0 to 5 and affected the town of Allendale in southeast Illinois. Most of the town was destroyed. 50 people were injured, but no one was killed.
2008 - An EF-3 tornado tracked from Poplar Grove to Lawrence in Boone and McHenry Counties. The tornado did damage to an apple orchard along with many homes and farm buildings. A freight train was also derailed.
