Weather Almanac For 12/21

This Day In Weather History

1836 - A very strong cold front passed through central Illinois.  According to eyewitnesses, reports indicated that temperatures went from the 40s to zero almost instantly.  We have to rely on eyewitness reports, because there are no temperature records from 1836.  The water in ponds and streams became waves as 70 mph winds howled as the front passed.  The waves then froze in place.  Small animals were frozen in their tracks.  Two men were killed when they froze to death near Rushville (Schuyler County).  This was the beginning of what was referred to as the "Winter of Starving Time in Illinois.
