This Day In Weather History

1949 - Christian and Shelby Counties had an out-of-season tornado that took the roofs off seven homes in Pana.  There was one person injured when a barn was destroyed.  

2000 - Both central and northern Illinois got a large amount of snow when a major winter storm moved through.  The heaviest of the snow was in Cook and DuPage Counties where over 15 inches fell.  6 to 10 inches fewll as far south as central Illinois, along and north of a Canton to Morton to Griley line.  There was also freezing rain and sleet mixed in with the snow south of this line.  Winds also caused a problem as they reached 35 mph with gusts as high as 45.  This caused a lot of blowing and drifting problems, with northeast Illinois seeing near blizzard conditions.  19 people in Chicago died while shoveling snow due to heart failure or hypothermia.
